The Devil's Bride
This is the story of Marguerite
Slaughter, a poor woman murdered
by her crazed husband Lester Kahl.
The murder occurred at the family
farm between Shipman and
Medora, IL. Kahl's father was a
Deputy Sheriff  at the time and had
to arrest his own son for the
murder. Kahl was convicted and
sentenced  to hang. The hanging
occurred with in weeks of his
sentencing.  Kahl's hanging was the
last hanging in Macoupin County.
Frank Fries was a Deputy Sheriff
during this time and was the source
for this article. Fries went on to
become Sheriff and later served in
Congress during the Roosevelt
Administration.
