LUCAS

LUCAS PFEIFFENBERGER

Lucas Pfeiffenberger was born November 14, 1834 in Dayton Ohio.  
His parents were John and Elizabeth (Miller) Pfeiffenberger.  His
parents were born and raised in Germany.  His father was a farmer in
Ohio. As a young man he learned carpentry as a trade.  He then went
to California in search of Gold.  He was made a Deputy Sheriff for
some time in the mining town of Hangtown, which later became
Placerville.  

At some point Lucas returned to Ohio to visit his parents.  On his
return trip to California he decided to stop off in Alton to visit a
former teacher.  Mr. Juncker convinced Lucas to stay in Alton.   Some
time after Lucas got settled in Alton he started an architectural
business.  Lucas is known for designing many homes and businesses
in and around the Alton Area.  

In 1866 Lucas became the Chief of the Alton Fire Department, the
Department was still a volunteer service at that time. He served 4
terms as the Mayor of Alton. Lucas was married in 1867 to Elizabeth
Campbell Millen Mather.  They raised 5 Children together.
Several of the boys ended up working with their father
in his firm.


Lucas passed away at his home on State Street in 1918
at the age of 83.
